FCC Licensing

Certain Motorola two-way radio models operate on licensed, shared frequencies regulated by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Proper licensing is required to help reduce interference, ensure reliable communications, and remain compliant with federal regulations.

Motorola CLS Series and RDX Series business radios, for example, require FCC licensing. These radios operate on shared frequencies, and it is the responsibility of the end user to obtain and maintain a valid license before use. Licensing helps coordinate frequency use among nearby businesses and minimizes the risk of communication disruption.

Motorola DTR Series and RM Series radios do not require FCC licensing. These models operate on license-free frequencies and can be deployed immediately without filing an application.

How FCC Licensing Works

In most cases, the FCC issues a single site-based license that authorizes the use of a specific frequency (or frequencies) within a defined geographic area. This license typically covers all radios operating under that system, so individual radios do not need to be licensed separately.

Depending on your location and frequency availability, frequency coordination by an FCC-approved local coordinator may be required. Coordination ensures compatible frequency assignments and may involve additional fees or processing time.

Applying for a License

Licenses are obtained through the FCC’s Universal Licensing System (ULS), an online portal used to apply for, manage, and renew wireless licenses.
